Kwanzaa, celebrated each year from December 26 to January 1, is a week-long honoring of African heritage, family and community. Created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, it is, in his words, “a cultural holiday, not a religious one” — one that welcomes all people to reflect on the Nguzo Saba, the seven principles: Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba and Imani.

FAQs About Kwanzaa Quotes
What is Kwanzaa?
Kwanzaa is a seven-day cultural celebration held from December 26 to January 1 each year. Founded in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, it honors African heritage and African-American culture through the Nguzo Saba — seven principles that guide reflection, family gatherings and community events. You can read more about the history of Kwanzaa on Britannica.
What are the seven principles of Kwanzaa?
The Nguzo Saba are: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one principle, and this collection of kwanzaa quotes is organized the same way.
When is Kwanzaa in 2026?
Kwanzaa 2026 begins on Saturday, December 26, 2026 and ends on Friday, January 1, 2027. The dates are the same every year: December 26 through January 1.
How do you wish someone a happy Kwanzaa?
The traditional greeting is “Habari Gani?” — Swahili for “What is the news?” — and the reply is the principle of the day, such as “Umoja!” A simple “Happy Kwanzaa” is also warmly received. For ready-to-send lines, see our Kwanzaa wishes collection.
